An artisan is sharpening his carving knife in a quiet corner of King's Museum, an Arts and Crafts shop in Mysore, about 200 kilometeres from Bangalore. It takes about two years for a small team of skilled craftsmen to carve one wooden elephant of this size. When finished, it would sell for about $15,000.

A family is standing on the banks of river Kaveri in Ranganathittu bird sanctuary, near Mysore, India. Though small in area, at barely 2 square kilometers, the sanctuary is a popular tourist attraction.
